Birth_Doula_childbirth_education.jpeg

As a birth doula, my primary role is to make you and your partner feel prepared, informed and supported for the sacred transition you are going through as a family. This encompasses education and empowerment on the physiology of labor, newborn procedures, pain regulation, the importance of set and setting, physical preparation of your body and the breath as a guiding force.

Equally important is to really get to know you, your beliefs, your feelings, your preferences and how you envision your birth to be. I am originally from The Netherlands where still the majority of the women is labouring naturally without pain medication. My birth doula approach is that I bring in calmness and trust because I believe in your body’s wisdom and will advocate for your and your partners wishes and desires.

"As much as I researched and tried to prepare for giving birth, I was so nervous about labor, especially in a hospital, where medical interventions may be pushed for convenience. I feared my partner and I might get overwhelmed and not remember the breathing techniques we learned, or might not know what questions to ask the doctors. I wanted someone with lots of natural birthing experience to be in our corner. She gave me the confidence I needed to know that I was fully supported going into labor. She coached my husband on how to coach me through the labor. I debated if I really needed a doula for a long time, but the further along I got and as my doctors talked about drugs - I got a call from someone in scheduling saying I was going to be induced and assumed I'd be having an epidural! When I said I'd rather not have an epidural she said "it does hurt ya know"- I knew I needed someone who believed I could give birth without drugs and believed that was a natural and normal thing to do. The confidence Susan gave me was  invaluable. I felt I connected with her from our first phone conversation. Susan is a kind and gentle spirit, but is also very reasonable and relies on science and research backed evidence. I appreciated her Ayurvedic approach to wellness too."
